In anticipation of planned construction of the new fire station on Vernon Street, the City of Keene is implementing changes in traffic patterns that will take place April 16, 2011.

Traffic pattern changes are being put into place to safely control the flow of traffic and help accommodate a reserved-space parking plan. The parking plan seeks to provide additional parking to replace spaces lost from the City-owned parking lot between Vernon and Mechanic Streets as a result of the construction project. Traffic patterns will change to one-way on Vernon, Mechanic, Middle, and Summer Streets as well as a portion of Elm Street.

Elm Street Traffic will be one-way on /Elm Street between Union and Vernon Streets. Traffic will flow south, towards downtown. Traffic traveling on lower Elm Street will be able to only turn left on Mechanic Street, but will be permitted to turn in both directions on Vernon Street.

Vernon Street Traffic will be one-way on Vernon Street between Elm and Court Streets. The traffic flow will be from east to west (from Washington Street to Court Street). Two-way traffic will remain on Vernon Street between Washington and Elm Streets.

Mechanic Street There will be one-way traffic on Mechanic Street traveling east from Court Street to Washington Street.

Middle Street Traffic will be one-way, traveling south on Middle Street between Summer and Winter Streets.

Summer Street Traffic on Summer Street will be one-way from School Street traveling east to Court Street.

A city-wide collaborative planning effort involving Keene Police, Fire & Safety, Planning, Public Works and Parking Enforcement  is implementing reserved permit parking on Vernon, Washington, Elm, Mechanic, Middle and Summer Streets to assist area businesses and residents affected by the loss of parking created by the construction project.
