Programs and Events

Martin Luther King, Jr. / Jonathan Daniels Committee is pleased to regular sponsor free public programs.

Save the date Tues. April 10, 2012!

Award winning author Phillip Hoose will speak at the Keene Public Library on Tues. April 10 ClaudetteColvinon his book Claudette Colvin: Twice Towards Justice.  Do you know that on March 2, 1955, months before Rosa Parks did the same, teenager Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white person on a Montgomery bus & was arrested? This wonderful book tells her story. His presentation “When it Comes to Justice...You Can't Sugarcoat It” recounts his journey from locating the elusive and virtually unknown teenage heroine of bus desegregation to standing by her side accepting the National Book Award. Claudette Colvin: Twice Towards Justice profiles the Montgomery 15-year-old fought injustice all the way to the Supreme Court.

Hoose will also speak directly to young people at the Keene Public Library on Tues. afternoon April 10.  Details are still being worked out but he will be discussing his books We Were There Too: Young People in History and It's Our World, Too!: Young People Who Are Making A Difference.

These programs are sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. / Jonathan Daniels Committee of the City of Keene and Keene Public Library. The purpose of the City's Martin Luther King Jr. / Jonathan Daniels committee is to celebrate and memorialize the lives of Martin Luther King, Jonathan Daniels and the principles of civil equality and multiculturalism for which they stood. The committee educates the public about the lives of these individuals and the principles of equality and non-violence to which they dedicated their lives.

Day of Service

A Day of Service is held annually on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We seek to honor two important civil rights leaders, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jonathan Daniels, by giving back to our local community through service. These year, Keene High School students are creating a mural at the Keene Recreation Center as part of the City's Day of Service.
